The Truth About Smart’s Freedom Plan

Smart Communications’ Freedom Plan is a postpaid plan but without the minimum monthly service fee (MSF). In other words, you only pay for what you actually used. For me, this is like a prepaid sim without load expiration, but without the worry of where to reload. This is perfect for my iPad (Wifi + 3G), especially that I have wifi both at home and in the office, and I only need to use 3G connectivity when I’m out.

Applying for the plan, according to the official webpage, is as easy as showing your face at any Smart Wireless Center and present a valid ID. But talk about false advertising. Here are additional important details you need to know that are absent from their website and/or ads:

  • You need to pay Php 250.00 as processing fee upfront;
  • Your new sim comes with 40 minutes free calls to any local network and landline valid for 30 days only;
  • You need to have a valid Globe postpaid or prepaid sim, because they will call you at that Globe number to verify your ownership;
  • You need to consume (and pay) at least Php 1.00 within 60 days, otherwise they will deactivate your account;

Thus, calling this plan a zero-based postpaid plan, as what other bloggers did, is inappropriate.

deuts August 31, 2012 Reply

@Gerard — no, the P250 is just processing fee, you can treat it as your payment for the free 40 minutes.

“You need to consume (and pay) at least Php 1.00 within 60 days, otherwise they will deactivate your account” – without the minimum monthly service fee but with a 1peso 60days fee lol

Actually the minimum of 1.02 pesos is a pretty good deal as maintenance fee for 59 days. They should just have made it clear that you have to consume at least that in their brochures and announcements so people do not get inconvenienced having to line up or call for reconnection. We all know incompetent their customer service is when we are lining up at the service center or being put on hold at the phone.
