Facebook Messenger – a Free Mobile Messaging App

Facebook has just made available a free stand-alone messaging app for your mobile phone. It will be like BlackBerry’s BBM service, or WhatsApp, or Kik, or LiveProfile, or PingChat!, but that you don’t need an additional ID, as all your contacts in Facebook will be available for messaging, may they be using the app as well, or just in any other mobile device, or the web.

Get and send messages fast

With the new standalone Messenger app, now messaging with friends is faster than ever. Messages are delivered instantly, and they’re always just a click away.

Unfortunately, it’s only available (yet!) for iOS and Android (have I already told you about the developers’ preference in developing mobile apps?), and for iOS it’s only available as of the moment in the US iTunes store.

If all goes well, it could be the BBM killer — that is if it’ll really deliver messages fast as they claim. Imagine you won’t be constrained by any one platform or carrier. And best of all it’s free.

After all, people these days check their Facebook messages and notifications more often than they do check their emails.

Facebook Messenger could probably be the closest thing that we could have an IMAP/POP access to our Facebook messages, but that it’s only available via mobile devices — no desktop access.

We all do love the official Facebook apps for different devices. But personally, in my iPhone experience, I oftentimes find it too slow, in browsing as well as in terms of push notifications. Add that to the fact that it’s constantly crashing. So a stand-alone app is certainly welcome that’ll do all just that — messaging.
